Introduction
You can run into problems with Unity Ads before your campaign even starts generating meaningful spend. All it takes is choosing a single app, cutting the testing budget, and then adjusting bids and budgets after just 24 hours because the numbers don't look quite right.

In Unity Ads, performance largely depends on the data you feed the algorithm, the users you ask it to find, and how much room you give your campaigns to learn.

We've published more than 10 articles about Unity, covering campaign launches, creatives, optimization strategies, platform-specific mechanics, and what makes this traffic source different.

But this time, we're taking things further. Instead of simply explaining how Unity works, we want to show you how to work with it using actual numbers.

That's why we're sharing some of our internal benchmarks and practical guidelines: how many apps to test per setup, what budget ranges to allocate across different Tiers, how many creatives to launch with, what CPI, registration, and deposit metrics to expect, when to adjust bids and budgets, and which signals indicate that a campaign is ready to scale.

We've broken down a Unity Ads launch into five key decisions that Profit Rental clients work through:
  • Start with the data.
  • Choose your optimization.
  • Build your creatives.
  • Let the algorithm learn.
  • Scale up.

From here on, it's all about practical benchmarks, real numbers, and decisions you can apply to your next launch.
Start with the Data: Budget, Tier, and Apps for Testing
Before getting into Payer, ROAS, or creatives, you need to make three fundamental decisions: which Tier you're targeting, how much budget you're willing to allocate to testing, and how many apps you'll use to validate your setup.

These decisions form the foundation of your Unity Ads launch.
If your initial setup is too limited, you simply won't collect enough meaningful data to make informed decisions about the traffic source.

Here's what Profit Rental recommends as a starting point:
Apps: 3–5 apps per setup, with a minimum of 2.
Testing budget: 3,000–5,000, depending on the Tier.
Daily campaign budget: 400–600 for Tier 1, 200–350 for Tier 2, and 100–150 for Tier 3.

The key is to give each setup enough volume to distinguish random fluctuations from actual performance patterns.
Before launching, it's also worth defining your target economics.
We've compiled Profit Rental's average Android CPI and Inst2Dep benchmarks to help you estimate expected CPI, CPA Reg, CPA Dep, and conversion rates before spending your first dollar. These aren't strict KPIs. They're practical reference points, and actual performance will depend on your GEO, product, and campaign setup. But having this baseline makes it much easier to evaluate your initial results.

Sasha, In-App Tech Support at Profit Rental:
"Before launch, we can help you compare your expected campaign economics against our benchmarks. We have working Unity Ads benchmarks for different GEOs, and we can share the relevant data before you start so you know what performance range to aim for."

Many Profit Rental clients use our exclusive Unity benchmarks to avoid making decisions blindly. You can request the latest benchmarks for your GEO directly in your team chat with us. Don't cut corners on the data you'll later use to evaluate the entire campaign setup.

First, allocate enough budget and volume for a proper test. Only then should you decide whether the traffic source is working for your offer.
Choose Your Optimization: Payer, ROAS, or CPI
Once you're ready to launch, the next question is which users you want Unity to find.
Payer, ROAS, and CPI optimization give the algorithm three different objectives, which means they can attract very different audiences.

Payer optimization focuses on users who are more likely to make a payment. The key signal for the algorithm is whether the target event occurs.

ROAS optimization goes a step further, targeting users with higher predicted value.
As a result, acquiring these users may cost more upfront, but their performance further down the funnel can tell a completely different story.

CPI optimization focuses on app installs.
It can be useful for testing creatives, GEOs, or generating additional volume. However, a cheap install doesn't necessarily mean you're acquiring a valuable user.

Which Metrics Matter When Choosing an Optimization Strategy?
CPI with Payer optimization can be 2–3 times lower than with ROAS, while the Inst2Dep conversion rate can also be 2–4 times lower.

This is why a low CPI means very little on its own. You need to evaluate Inst2Dep and the overall campaign economics.
You also don't necessarily need to start by acquiring cheap installs through CPI optimization and then switch to a deeper conversion event.

If your tracking is configured correctly and you understand your target economics, you can launch directly with Payer or ROAS optimization.

Sasha, In-App Tech Support at Profit Rental:
"Payer and ROAS target different audience segments, so one strategy doesn't necessarily need to replace the other. We compare them across the entire funnel, not just by CPI: registrations, deposits, Inst2Dep, and the final value of each user. A more expensive install can actually deliver better economics."
Build Your Creative Strategy: How Many Creatives and Which Formats to Launch
Once you've selected your optimization strategy, the algorithm needs enough creative variations to identify the combinations that work. Relying on a single strong video is too limiting. Even a high-performing creative may struggle to generate sufficient volume or burn out quickly.

A practical starting point for Unity Ads is 4–6 creatives per campaign. This gives you enough room to test different approaches without spreading your budget across dozens of variations.

You can start with the following formats:
  • Video + Endcard
  • Video + Playable
  • Playable
After the first few weeks, you'll need to refresh your creative pool. A useful benchmark is to introduce 2–3 new creatives every 2–3 weeks, depending on your campaign volume and performance trends.

Sasha, In-App Tech Support at Profit Rental:
"It's better to test genuinely different concepts and mechanics: gameplay, UGC, social-style creatives, different hooks, and scenarios. Simply changing a button color or the first two seconds of the same video isn't enough. Once you identify winning approaches, you can develop them through new variations. We've covered more creative mechanics and strategies in our Unity Creative Playbook article."

The faster you refresh your creative pool, the more opportunities you have for testing and scaling.
Our agency accounts have no restrictions on creative uploads, so you can expand your tests and introduce new concepts regularly.

Creative Localization for Unity Ads
Localization is another important part of creative production. Simply translating the text into the target language isn't enough.
A localized creative should feel like it was originally produced for that specific GEO.

That means using familiar expressions, local vocabulary, relevant currencies, offers, and visual details that resonate with the audience. To make this process easier, we've developed several AI prompts for creative localization. Here's one you can start using right away.

Let the Algorithm Learn: When to Leave Your Campaign Alone
Once your campaign is live and the first results start coming in, the most important thing is not to rush into making changes.
Give Unity enough time to learn.

Early intervention, constant budget and bid adjustments, targeting changes, and other major edits can disrupt the learning process and delay the point at which the campaign starts delivering more stable results.

What Benchmarks Should You Follow?
According to Unity's documentation, a useful learning benchmark is approximately 75 target events.
Based on our experience, campaigns often start showing noticeable signs of stabilization after approximately 3,500 installs.
If your campaign economics remain within acceptable limits and there are no technical issues, it's generally better to let the campaign collect data for the first 4–6 days without unnecessary changes.

When Should You Intervene Earlier?
There are situations where waiting isn't the right decision.
You should consider intervening earlier if:
  • The campaign isn't spending: You can increase the budget and bid to improve delivery.
  • CPI is significantly above your target range within the first 24 hours: It's better to pause the campaign and investigate.
  • The campaign has spent approximately 2× your target CPA Dep without generating a deposit.

For the initial evaluation, focus on CPI, CPA Reg, and CPA Dep.
These metrics help determine whether to increase the budget, reduce spending, or pause the campaign. CTR and CVR are useful for diagnosing the problem when a key performance metric starts declining. It's also better to analyze performance separately for each app and for individual creatives within that app.

When event costs and key metrics remain stable for approximately 2–5 days, that's a positive signal. At this point, you can start preparing the setup for scaling and building your blacklist.
Scale Up: Budgets, Apps, Creatives, and Optimization Strategies
Once your campaign setup has stabilized, there are several ways to scale Unity Ads:
  • Increase budgets.
  • Add new apps.
  • Introduce fresh creatives.
  • Test additional optimization strategies.

All of these approaches can work, but increasing the budget is usually the most logical starting point.
It's the simplest way to check whether the campaign can handle additional volume without losing profitability.
A practical benchmark is to increase the budget by 40–50% every 4–5 days, provided campaign economics remain stable.

From there, scaling can involve expanding the entire setup:
  • 3× more apps.
  • 2× or more new creatives launched in new campaigns.
  • 2× additional optimization strategies tested in new campaigns.

We don't recommend duplicating an already successful campaign.
Instead, keep the winning setup running and generate additional volume through new apps and other scaling opportunities.
However, scaling has its limits.

If CPI starts increasing, registrations and deposits become more expensive, and ROI declines, your setup may be approaching its available volume ceiling.

At that point, another budget increase won't solve the problem. It's time to refresh creatives and look for new growth opportunities. If you run into challenges while scaling, our team can step in, analyze the situation, and help you reach higher volumes.
When All Five Decisions Come Together
Looking at all five decisions together reveals something important: Unity Ads performance rarely breaks down because of a single issue.
You can launch with solid creatives but allocate too little budget. Choose the right optimization strategy but start adjusting bids too early. Achieve a strong CPI but miss a drop in conversions further down the funnel. That's why launching Unity Ads with a team that truly understands the traffic source can make such a difference.

You need more than access to an advertising account. You need a team that can support you throughout the entire launch.
When you launch with Profit Rental, you get more than an agency ad account.

Before your first dollar of ad spend, we can help you compare your GEO and expected economics against our benchmarks, determine an appropriate testing budget, select an optimization strategy, and understand which performance metrics are realistic for your specific setup.

Sasha, In-App Tech Support at Profit Rental:
"If the campaign isn't spending, we check whether the bid and budget are competitive enough to enter the auction. If CPI moves significantly outside the target range, we analyze the app and creatives. If installs are coming in but aren't converting into registrations, we investigate where the funnel is losing users. Once the setup stabilizes, we help the team scale it."

This is what makes our approach to Unity different. We don't simply provide an ad account and leave the team to figure everything out through trial and error. Profit Rental clients get access to the knowledge we've built through real campaign launches:
  • GEO- and Tier-specific benchmarks.
  • Proven approaches to Payer and ROAS optimization.
  • Creative strategies and localization.
  • Campaign optimization and scaling insights.
  • Technical support for integrations, conversion events, and ad account issues.

You can work through all five decisions from this article with our team, from your initial campaign setup to the point where your campaigns are ready to handle significantly more ad spend.
And these aren't just theoretical recommendations. You can see the results in real client case studies. We regularly break down how teams started, which decisions they made throughout their campaigns, and what results they ultimately achieved.

For example, we've shared how one team scaled to $73,818 in Unity Ads, and how another reached $62,785 in ad spend with 29.8% ROI over four months using Mintegral. These are just a few examples. You can find more Profit Rental case studies on our blog.
